Together as a community we all have different points of view, beliefs, and goals.Those dreams shape the view of our future and living. In the play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hasberry it tells the story of a black family living in the south side of chicago. They lived in ghettos where they shared a bathroom with many on the same floor. In their apartment they also dealt with only a small window in the kitchen. After Big Walter the father and husband of the family passed away they got a life insurance check for $10,000. With the check they all want to fulfill their dreams and desires.The family together deals with racism,poverty, and dreams deferred. Mama’s plant was an important factor that changed throughout the story as the family matured and grew to fulfill their dreams in the past they couldn’t. For example, in the quote,”Lord, if this little old plant don;t get more sun than it’s been getting it ain't never going to see spring again.” This quote proves her devotion to keep going even if the environment doesn’t let her to.She wants to give her plant a better life so it can live longer and thrive. She has hope that the plant can continue just like her family. Another way the plant proves to be an important symbol is that it symbolizes Mama’s dreams. Her dream is to have her own garden she can enjoy. In the past Mama never had the opportunity to have a garden where she could grow and care for plants.
