For my creative response to Night by Elie Wiesel, I decided to make an alternative book cover. The theme that I chose to portray in my adaptation of the cover is the journey from darkness to light. My cover is black at the top and the amount of black reduces towards the bottom of the cover. I did this to show the transition from darkness to light that is shown during this novel.
Firstly, the quote of Eliezer's religious and moral nadir. Eliezer says "... Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes..."(Wiesel 34). The horrific, indefatigable moments that Eliezer endures destroyed his beliefs.
At the beginning of the novel Eliezer is strong in his belief of God and prays and studies scripture with his friend Moishe. That is a strong change to go from Eliezer reassuring his faith every day to saying that he was in a world without God, love, or mercy. Prisoners in Auschwitz received about three “meals” a day. Half a liter of “coffee” for breakfast, and a liter of soup for the noon meal. For dinner, the prisoners usually received about 10 ounces of black bread, with 25 grams of sausage or margarine, or a tablespoon of marmalade of cheese. The small amount of food prisoners got in concentration camps caused them to starve. In the story, Night, the absence of food caused Eliezer and others around him to slowly change themselves and their morales, hoping for a little extra soup or a crust of bread.
In his memoir Night, Elie Wiesel details that the Jews of his hometown Sighet Hungary, cling to an illusion of safety up until the moment of their arrival at Auschwitz. Mosche the Beadle provides the first evidence of potential danger; however the townspeople choose to ignore the warnings and instead condemn Mosche the Beadle as a lunatic. The Jews of Sighet choose to sacrifice the ”joy in[Mosche the Beadle’s] eyes”(7) to maintain a sense of security and isolation from the actions of the Hungarian police. Upon the seizure of power by a pro-nazi party the Jewish people merely view the change “in abstract”(9). They do not allow themselves to rationalize the event. Elie Wiesel wrote a book about his days during the HOLOCAUST. The Book itself is an incarnation of the symbolic trauma he has experienced. Three pieces of evidence from the story will be explained on how Elie’s suffering was symbolic. Now the first piece of evidence will be explained. First we explain the symbolism of the crematory.
In the 1956 memoir Night, by Elie Wiesel, he illustrates that witnessing human cruelty was his traumatizing memory of the Holocaust. Weisel supports his illustration through the use of symbolism, which demonstrates that witnessing human cruelty had more effect on him that anything else he will ever experience. He uses the flames that he saw as a symbol for the atrocities that he saw, because the flames themselves were the first example of cruelty that he ever witnessed. The author’s purpose is to explain why he will never forget “that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night”, so that the reader can understand the consequences of cruelty. Eliezer loses all of his hope, trust, and beliefs. He becomes even more reliant on himself than anyone else because he now knows that only he can help himself and no one else. Elie has shut himself off from from other people and his faith. "
Symbolism can be seen through both good and bad alike. Though when it comes to instances that have to do with the holocaust, it’s almost always, if not always, a painful connotation. The holocaust is one of if not the the largest instance of mass genocide in recorded history. Leaving each Jew that survived with a different story to tell. While their story’s remained different, the pain that they each experienced was not.
Eliezer’s words in the middle of p.34, starting with, “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in the camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed,”(34) gave a new meaning to the word night. The story had gone more in depth on the horrors of the time, also it reinforces what I had said in my previous journal, that Night, the title, refers to the never ending darkness that surrounds Eliezer. In this part of the book Eliezer writes “Never shall I forget,”(34) followed by everything he had seen, every story he will remember, everything he has endured. The repetition of the “Never shall I forget,”(34) isolates every attribute he doesn’t want to forget, which almost honors it and then he moves on to the next.
As time carried on, Eliezer’s faith and connection to God died. It was too much for him to believe that his once-beloved God had abandoned them. “Blessed be God’s name? Why, but why would I bless him? ... Because he caused thousands of children to burn in his mass graves?
He’s also a deeply observant Jew, studying Talmud by day and Kabbalah by night, Elie is also dedicated to becoming closer to his God (Pg . 8) . When Elie told his father he wants to study Kabbalah ,his father thought he was too young for it and shouldn't spend his time on it because Maimonides told them they must be thirty before studying other religions, they must study the basic first ( Pg

As portrayed in this passage from Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night, “night” is used numerous times as a central symbol. The nonfiction novel takes place during the Holocaust throughout several concentration camps. The word “night” literally means the period of darkness in each twenty-four hours; the time from sunset to sunrise, but symbolically it commonly represents sadness, fear, and negative commendations.
Eliezer even asked his father to find him a master to guide him in his studies of Kabbalah which is an esoteric method of discipline which is a tradition in Judaism. This is illustrated when Eliezer states that, “One day I asked my father to find me a master to guide me in my studies of Kabbalah. ”(Pg.4) Eliezer was a observant and curious kid that had a huge interest in his religion.
