The Civil War is not something that one desires to relive, but Shiloh by Shelby Foote brings to life one of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Foote takes the reader through the Battle of Shiloh from 17 different soldiers’ perspectives. Foote combines his narrative style with traditional historical style to depict the importance of the Battle of Shiloh with accuracy to engage his audience. Through the development of his narrative style, Foote is able to change the way American histories are written. Shelby Foote utilizes Union and Confederate perspectives to present a true narrative on the Battle of Shiloh, while highlighting the human experience in war, to influence the American’s view on history.
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is a novel that emphasizes symbolism in chapter 7, “How to Tell a War Story” the character/narrator Tim O’Brien expresses The struggle that affects a soldier in the war. “He shot it twice in the flanks. It wasn't to kill; it was to hurt it” (O'Brien, 75) In Chapter 7 How to Tell a war story, the story expresses the grief that Rat Kiley goes through.
Based on the historical facts, Bradbury’s story “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” presents a believable portrait of a Civil War drummer boy. The characters, their role in battle, and the dangers they faced are some of the reasons why I believe the story is historically accurate. The characters are one of the reasons why I believe it is accurate. In the story, the drummer boy “just turned fourteen,” meaning that he is within the age group that most drummer boys are, which is around 12-14 years old.
Ray Bradbury set this story to be on the eve of a battle in the Civil War. The main character, Joby, is portrayed as a young boy who was sent off to be the drummer boy for a Civil War troop going into battle. Joby is afraid of what might happen, and if he will make it home to see his family. Many novelists covet the notion of allowing their readers to discover a deeper meaning within their passages. Most notably, authors achieve this through implementation of literary constructs such as symbolism and allegory. One instance in which the audience is cognizant to such literary constructs is through Bobbie Ann Mason 's short story, "Shiloh".
James Baldwin was a writer and civil rights activist. He was born August 2, 1924, in Harlem, New York. What once was a community of artists and musicians now a neighborhood of African American Culture and a neighborhood deeply affected by poverty and violence. Baldwin would go on to graduate high school in 1942, however he would put college on hold to stay and help support his seven brothers. At the age of seventeen, Baldwin old leave his family and move to a neighborhood in New York City, Greenwich Village, which was famous for its artistic environment and free thinkers.
Bobbie Ann Mason’s short story Shiloh is a story explaining the events leading up to a husband and wife’s marriage coming to an end. This couple rushed into marriage because they had a baby on the way, but four months after the baby was born it died of sudden infant death syndrome. In this story Norma Jean ,the wife, is the breadwinner of the family while her husband Leroy stays at home because of an injury he sustained at work. Both Leroy and Norma Jean fail to confront the issues they are having, and because of this, the bond between them grows weaker the longer they are together. Their marriage is bound to end at some point.

Written by Bobbie Ann Mason, “Shiloh” depicts the troubled marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean Moffitt, a couple whose relationship collapses due to a lack of communication. Leroy and Norma Jean are two contrasting characters who fail to resolve their differences through communication, creating tension between the two and leading to their ultimate divorce. Through the characterization of Leroy and Norma Jean and the depiction of a conflict between two spouses, Bobbie Ann Mason stresses that communication is key.

The misunderstanding and lack of knowledge that the narrator experiences, about his brother, is something that many today feel, as their own family members are being prosecuted and they do not comprehend why. Within the story, there are numerous subtle ideas that are used to progress the story and theme along to the ending that is given. James Baldwin advances the theme of his story, that misfortune and anguish can be renovated into a unique art form, using characterizations, settings, and symbolisms. One of the main literary devices that is used to express the theme is characterization.
At first Joby didn’t believe the general, but the general convinces him that the drummer boy is what makes the army. Joby stays a drummer boy. In this story, there are symbols of importance & bravery, father figure & inspiration, and death. A symbol is something that has a meaning beyond itself. In Ray Bradbury’s story, Joby, a drummer boy, symbolizes importance and bravery, the general symbolizes a father figure and inspiration, and The Battle of Shiloh symbolizes death.

The authors show this symbolism by how the townspeople treat the soldiers, how the soldiers treat girls, and how the soldiers treat the townspeople over time. The symbolism in this story gives a message to the reader to treat soldiers with respect, and not just ignore them because their story is boring or uncomfortable. In “Soldier’s Home,” Krebs’ town is one which “has heard too many atrocity stories to be thrilled by actualities” (84).
