The Story Told in Reverse Why do people like to remember all their childhood memories, or is because your dreaming. The First Part Last is a novel written by Angela Johnson. Bobby is a 16 year old by, and the main character, Bobby and his girlfriend, Nia. They have found out that Nia is pregnant, and oh boy… do they have lots to learn. All these symbols have come to make me believe that Bobby has come of age. First symbol that makes me believe that Bobby has come of age is the basketball. As the basketball rolled away from bobby down the hall it represented his childhood leaving or rolling away. In the story bobby was going to play basketball and he forgot something in his apartment, so he set the basketball down and it rolled down the hall. The basketball is a symbol of Bobby’s childhood rolling away. The reason is he was a father, which means that Bobby is now responsible for the child. The arcade down the street symbolized as childhood memories. When Bobby was on his way home from picking up Feather from the sitter and Bobby saw the arcade and remembered all the great memories. The arcade is a symbol of Bobby’s childhood memories. This symbol, the arcade, is important because it’s showing that Bobby is coming of age, although he will not be able to create any more of those great memories because he is a father and has responsibilities. The final symbol that leads to believe that Bobby has come of age is the red balloon. When Nia gave Bobby the red balloon in the birthday chapter it was a symbol of the love she had for Bobby. It was Bobby’s birthday, and Bobby and Nia were meeting up. This is when Nia told Bobby she was pregnant.This is important as the red balloon given to Bobby was a symbol of the love Nia has for Bobby.
