The novel, The Handmaid's Tale, centers on a woman named Offred. She is abused of her body when she gets constantly raped in order to provide a child from her Commander and his wife. It burdens her life daily. Many literary elements are revealed through the novel such as symbolism ….. That come together to affect the story, and the reader. Symbolism plays a huge part in the story. Symbols can affect a reader's thoughts furthermore, put them through a metamorphosis as they realize the deeper meaning the symbol can portray. Flowers are a symbol in the Handmaid's Tale which show the lack of fertility the women are given. Flowers typically represent beauty or fertility, however, Atwoods strengthens the flower meaning and gives them a deeper meaning
