In Neda Ulaby’s article “For You To Borrow, Some Libraries Have To Go Begging” various literary techniques are used to support her thesis. In this article Ulaby, discusses the issues with libraries obtaining funding. She mentions how some libraries have the benefit of having local and state funding, while other libraries, like in Vermont, have to support themselves on their own. Despite some of the differences with in various states for funding of libraries, libraries all across the country are facing a decline in funding. Despite this decline in funds and potential closings and lack of resources of some libraries a significant percent of Americans have to rely on libraries for things like internet access.

Jana Hensel was thirteen when the Berlin wall fell, and in her memoir, After the Wall, she laments her youth and the sudden disappearance of the German Democratic-Republic that occurred almost overnight, especially in her memories. While Hensel finds nothing wrong with her now Western life, this memoir is dedicated towards people like her, who even now are straddling the line between the East German past and the West German future, and she discusses her loss of identity through her nostalgia, her transitions, and her parents. Larson uses repetition to explain to his readers how, in the city of Chicago, it was incredibly easy to hide and pretend to be like everyone. By using this repetition, Larson can emphasize to his readers how important the phrase “so easy” is to the overall story. H. H. Holmes is clearly the person whom Larson is talking about and trying to convey to his readers how easy it was for him to blend in. When Larson says how easy it was to disappear he is explaining how Holmes was able to not only change his name but act like a normal person in the city of Chicago; in addition, Holmes was also able to deny everything he knew about his knowledge, such as the missing women. 2) This extract is found in “The White Album” written by Joan Didion, who is the creator of many significant different literature pieces, both novels and essays. “The White Album” was published in 1979, and is the first and longest essay in the book. In this essay Joan Didion essentially uses a women as a connecting thread to describe what was happening in America at that time. I believe that the woman may even be herself to a certain extent, trying to externalize all her thoughts. What is perceived from the essay is that Didion was submerged into the focus of some big events that were happening in that year, not only as a journalist but also as a bystander and a normal Californian.

The novel “Falling” by Anne Provoost has been twisted to depict messages about learning from the past, yet these ideas mask the true power of Benoit and his influential extremism. Lucas Beigne may be portrayed as the ‘protagonist’ of the book, yet he is simply one more character that is sucked into a web of charm and deceit. Benoit is infectious. This is introduced during the duos very first meeting, when Benoit promises Lucas, he’ll “do anything…to help [him]” after discovering he is Felix Stockx’s grandson. Beigne leaves this encounter with the mans “incredibly bright and blue” eyes burned into his mind, associating them with “the flame of a gas burner.”
Symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. In Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson uses literary devices to help the reader better understand Melinda’s personal changes and growth. Trees, lips, and coldness are all symbolically used to represent the changes of Melinda. Throughout the novel, trees play a big part in symbolizing Melinda. Melinda is constantly drawing and relating to trees in the book.
In the short story “Everyday Use,” Alice Walker shows the conflicts and struggles with people of the African-American culture in America. The author focuses on the members of the Johnson family, who are the main characters. In the family there are 2 daughters and a mother. The first daughter is named Maggie, who had been injured in a house fire has been living with her mom. Her older sister is Dee, who grew up with natural beauty wanted to have a better life than her mother and sister.
The literary elements in this poem add to the effect the poem has on the reader, which can be different for everyone, but it makes the reader reflect on their own life and how kindness has changed
Frida Kahlo created many glorious pieces. One of her most intriguing pieces is The Two Fridas. The image is quite symbolic and meaningful. Kahlo was a Mexican artist greatly known for her self portraits and the pain, passion and feminism of her paintings. The name of the piece I choose to analysis is Las dos Fridas, also known as The Two Fridas.

The short story, “ The Reunion” by Maya Angelou is about the past, and music, and reveals that sometimes music can speak better than people. Philomena and her family were former servant for the bakers back in Georgia. Years later Philomena becomes a famous pianist in Chicago. Philomena's music was an important part of her life, she used her music to represent her hurt and struggles.
