Introduction -
This film The lost thing was directed by Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann and narrated by Tim Minchin. It won the oscar for Best Animated short film. It was nominated for the 2011 Hugo award for best dramatic presentation, short form. It is set in the near future, in dystopian Melbourne, Australia. It is a story about a young boy who finds a lost object where he then tries to locate where it should be. This film shows the idea of being original and having a sense of belonging in the world. The first example of symbolism is the fake seaguls on the beach, this represents that all nature is dying and everything is man-made and nothing is nature now. Another example of symbolism is the identical umbrellas which symbolises that there is no originality and more and everything has to be the same. Another type of symbolism found on the beach was the man coming along at the end of the day popping a beach ball and sucking it into a big trash can, this represents everything being wasted after each day and nothing is ever left there anymore because there is so much polution that they cant have anything laying around anymore, this also makes the movie feel depressing and puts a sad, low mood on for most of the short film. Big walls on the beach shows the city being blocked off by nature, which moving away from nature everything is man-made and nothing is natural anymore, which feels the same way as what our actual world is going to feel like. When Shaun is dropping The Lost Thing off there is light beaming out like never seen in the movie, which shows clarity, heaven, freedom, life and happiness. Wonderland is also very quirkey with lots of different colour smashed around the place which makes the lost thing feel that it belongs somewhere. The music when you go into wonderland compared to the beach and city are very different, such as when you head into wonderland the music is realy upbeat unlike in the city when the music feels sad and
