Symbolism can be explained in many ways and various things can be used to symbolize something. Symbolism is also used to show emotions or the way someone is explaining something. Foreshadowing is an example of symbolism because it’s like thinking back at a time that once happened in the past, symbolizing memories of what happened during that time. For example the color black in “The Lottery” symbolizes death, therefore there’s death in the short story.
This short story called “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson takes place in small a village in the Summer with only 300 villagers “The Lottery” only takes place once a year, June 27 taking only 2 hours due to the amount of the people. That same day the children had just gotten out of school for summer break, the children were collecting stones for the lottery. As we know Mr. Summers and Mr. Graves make slips of papers and put the names of the villagers, then they put them into a black box. For example Mr.Summers is used as a symbol of irony of evil. He is shown to be nice and a kind person but in reality he’s just evil. I found this out in “Cumming Study Guide” because the author states “ The appearance of normalacy and cheerfulness hiding evil and corruption”. He also represents the time of the year because this lottery takes place in the summer. Mr.Graves symbolizes death because i found this on “Figueroa” the author stating “ Mr.Graves is a name of death foreshadowing the future outcome of “The Lottery”. Meaning the name Mr.Graves is like death which is what happens at the end of the story. As well as he could symbolize Darkness in the “Cumming Study Guides” “Mr.Graves whom citizens get the papers from, therefore it is almost like he is the one who has most influence over whose grave will be next”. He passes out the papers to the people like he knows who’s going to die
