Many movie directors use imagery to symbolize what’s going on in the movie. In the movie The Patriot, by Mel Gibson, is about a man making sacrifices for his family during the Revolutionary War. In this movie, Mel Gibson uses many images to symbolize freedom, religion, and hope.
One element in the movie is the North Star, which symbolizes protection. At the beginning of the movie, the children are looking out of the window staring up at the sky pointing at the North Star. Figuratively the North Star represents the children’s mother, Elizabeth’s grave stone. The children feel protected from their mother. You will the the Cross midway through the movie, when they’re in church praying for the men's souls in church, women who stands up for speech has a Cross on her neck. You will also notice that there’s Crosses all throughout the outer part of the church before it is burnt down by the British. Towards the end, you will see a Cross by the river near the French-led Indians camp site. The Cross represents faith and that they still have the souls of the other men with them.
The last image you will see in this movie, often, is the American Flag. In the beginning before the brawl, each side waves their flag to represent what they are fighting for. After the brawl, the son, Gabe finds pieces of the flag torn and scatter all over the battlefield. and the picks them up. In the end, the dad stitches the flag back together. The Flag represents pride, and blood, sweat, and tears.
Many movie directors use imagery to symbolize what’s going on in the movie. As you can tell, this movie has more than just a few images. The patriot is a real traumatic and upsetting movie. There’s a lot of violence shown in the movie. I felt very shaken after I watched this movie, but in a good way. I got a whole different perspective on the way I think of war
