The village was having trouble because of Rev. Samuel Parris who got there a few years back before the trials to become the first local ordained priest. Some disliked Parris as rigid and greedy, and that had made quarrels which Puritans were inclined to see as the work of the Devil. People in the village had to give up the three women. A woman of the name Tituba confessed to seeing the devil she was a slave that said it looked like a hog or a great dog. Tituba confessed to the crime and even gave up some of the witches in Salem Village.
Causing many suspicion of demonic activity throughout the salem village, hysteria spread quickly as the population ascended to witchcraft creating the act of cynicism. Most conducted these suspicions though dissecting their physical and mental image meaning that most of the civilians would convert to supernatural explanations in order to assume the act of demonic possession and I quote “Good also had a reputation for holding a grudge and for muttering curses against those who crossed her, which would have alarmed her neighbours, not least because many people believed that such curses would work” ( The Salem Witch Hunt, p.69). This quote taken from Sarah Good’s bibliography confirms the suspicions of witchcraft as these sign were depicted as supernatural to the puritans perspective. Being fearful of the devil, most puritans believed that the abnormal should endure punishment as for these acts were created against the church law leading to christian ignorance and disbelief and I quote “They also show how easily people could become convicted that hostile neighbours were wielding occult forces against them”(The Salem Witch Hunt, p.69).
The hysteria that occurred in Salem was driven largely by fear. People were frightened by these strange afflictions, recommenced Indian attacks, and the increase of Quakers and Anglicans in the area (Godbeer 166). Consequently, the infamous Salem Witch Trials arose, leading to dozens of accusations and a shocking number of convictions. Its legacy has led many to believe that all early New Englanders were quick to accuse and condemn suspected witches without any concrete evidence. Escaping Salem shatters this belief.
I founded interesting that the author noticed that the Salem village is the center of the witchcraft misbelief. By everything the evil noted in Goodman Brown; it makes sense that Hawthorne would use a Salem village for this story. In my reflection about the story, I realize that is a place where the events continuously happened because it has a different incidents or devices that are widely found in the literature and recognized as motifs appear. In general Salem Village was not content. “Fear and distrust are what caused this witchcraft menace in Salem. Fear renders foolish, emotions that take over, and leaves us grappling with illusion.” Love was also another factor that was lacking in Salem. Parents couldn’t hug their kids and the puritans had to go from childhood to adulthood with no teenage years in between.
She was a victim of the witch trials after the Putnams accuse her of witchery and she refuses to confess. She represents goodness and strength for the people who chose not to confess and give up their lives. Reverend Hale was summoned to Salem to investigate the “witchcraft” that is supposedly responsible for the younger children's mysterious illnesses. For the first part of the play, he supported there was witchcraft in the town but later he agrees the girls are all lying and he was being manipulated by them. He represents the truth of what is happening and tries to correct the wrongfulness by telling the prisoners to confess and save their lives, even though it would be a lie.
Salem was a town that was dignified for having good morals but that was completely the opposite in the play. The witch-hunt would bring townspeople together in the representation of community but it only turned out to be self-interested, driven people who wanted personal and political gain. For example, Thomas Putnam wanted his own daughter to accuse people of witchcraft that way he can get their land. Thomas Putnam, Goody Putnam, and Abigail Williams were greedy people and did this just to benefit for their own well-being (Core 4: Accumulation of Subjects). This act displays that the people are indeed greedy and only look out for themselves.
(pg. 453)” Young Goodman Brown is a man living in the puritan era who has a wife and family, and is deep in his Christian faith. Young Goodman Brown lived in a town that is all connected to through the local church. Early in the story Young Goodman brown would set out to meet a person who would later be labeled as the devil by one of the locals. Young Goodman brown would have a vision of everyone in his community that would show him their wicked sins.
Injustice means lack of fairness or justice, and/or an unjust act or occurrence according to the dictionary. Upon reading three stories of injustice, one might find that some reactions are more understandable than others. ‘Young Goodman Brown’, ‘The Lesson’, and ‘Saboteur’ are all stories of a character being handed some form of injustice. Mr. Chiu in ‘Saboteur’ had the most understandable response to his injustice. Goodman Brown learns about all the bad in the world from a dream, Sylvia learns about the injustice of racial discrimination, and Mr. Chiu learns about injustice through the police.

Hawthorne says, “Something fluttered lightly down through the air and caught on the branch of a tree” Faith’s pink ribbons symbolize purity. In the beginning of the story was Faith had her ribbons she was pure but at the end of the story when Young Goodman Brown saw Faith’s pink ribbon come down from the sky it represents how she succumed to evil and Hawthorne lost both his faith and his wife Faith. The third example of how Hawthorne uses symbolism to show the theme good versus evil in the story “Young Goodman Brown” is when the devil is telling Brown and Faith that they will have a new perspective of life, a life where everyone sins. In the beginning of the story Young Goodman Brown saw his family as godly and he saw Faith as pure but the devil shows him that his views are naive and the devil gives him the capability to see the dark side of everything and everyone.
