The descriptive passage above taken from, How the other Half Lives by Jacob A. Riis, demonstrates the isolation of the Chinese community from the rest of New York. Riis uses figurative language such as hyperbole, metaphor, and quotation, as well as other literary devices, to depict the Chinaman as an embodiment of Chinatown itself, where the cultural aspects are portrayed through the man and his doings. The descriptive passage I wrote as an imitation demonstrates how the eyes take in factual information which is then distorted by perception and outside influential factors. I used the same types of figurative language to depict vision as an embodiment of truth as well as trickery. The concept is displayed through the eyes and what they see.
In the short story, “ The Possibility of Evil” author Shirley Jackson uses several symbols in her story. The symbols were used to tell her story about an old lady named Ms. Strangeworth. Three main symbols used through the story where her roses, the letters, and Ms. Strangeworth herself. Being a black woman raised in a white world, Ann Petry was familiar with the contrast in lives of African Americans and whites (McKenzie 615). The Street, centered in 1940’s Harlem, details these differences. While Petry consistently portrays Harlem as dark and dirty, she portrays the all-white neighborhoods of Connecticut as light and clean. Physical the dead may never be able to be brought back to life but, mentally, through The Power of Literacy anything is possible. In Flannery O’Connor’s story, “Good Country People”, she uses symbolism to illustrate the antagonist and protagonist with more insight; for example, Manley’s hollow Bible signify how he really does not believe in Christianity, Hulga’s wooden leg portrayed her personality, and her name change represents how she is not the same girl she once was. First of all, the author introduces Manley Pointer as a young man that goes around homes selling Bibles, but little did she know that was not the case. When Manley Pointer goes on a date with Hulga the truth is revealed. Hulga has the impression that Manley is a young nice man that sells Bibles
