When I was 10 years old I looked up communism, and it meant ‘a society where property was public, and everyone would be helped according to needs.’ This confused me because I had always heard of communism in a negative context. Such a society would mean that, everyone would have food, water, shelter, an education and job. This is the ideal society. So why was it talked about with disgust and horror?
Another one of the main examples from the movie is at the end when the townspeople fight one another because of the colors changing. The basic characters who have not experienced emotion are still seen as black and white, how they think things should be. While the ones that have changed color have felt the emotions they fight for what should be the new norm. The bright colors and contradicting new art everyone sees causes riots and fights to break out. All of this is taken to court where everyone witnesses the mayor himself change color, and the people began to see that changing color is something you cannot help showing, similar to one’s emotions.
In the book the Color of Water, Hunter Jordan, James ' stepfather, died of a sudden stroke when he was younger. His mother first married a man named Andrew McBride, that was James’ biological dad, but was only alive to see the moment where his mother, Ruth, re-married to Hunter. When he had died each one of them had a different way of grieving. Ruth rode a blue bicycle Hunter had brought in before he died. For example, James explains how his mother rides the bike around everyday and “... what the world thought of her, a nonchalance in the face of what i perceived to be imminent danger from the blacks and whites who disliked her for being a white person in a black world.”

It may get a little frustrating after awhile... if someone even noticed that something was off. In the science fiction novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, there is a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas. He is named the new Receiver which is a very respected and high-end job in his community. This job also introduces him to a man that he calls the Giver.
Just think. Nobody has any knowledge of the past. You do not know what color is, you have no emotion, and everybody is the same. The world that you live in is colorless, emotionless, drab, even lifeless. This is the type of world that Jonas and The Giver live in.
Frank L. Baum used various colors through out his novel. These colors were used to describe different people, places and things. The colors were symbolic of those things. They symbolized how the world was during his time. I will be talking about 3 of them.

Color is a huge part of how people view different emotions and feelings. For an example, when people see the color black, they may feel darkness and loneliness. Using color as a description in books can really help the reader better understand what the author is trying to get across. Color can mean so much more than shades and tints, it can show true meaning and emotion. It's proven that warm colors trigger thoughts of happiness, energy, and optimism.

Colors can represent many different things. Artists utilizes colors in their artwork when they want you to portray a certain emotion or see what they are trying to express. For example, when an artist is trying to convey sadness they will often use dull colors like black or gray. When an artist is trying to express happiness they will use bright colors. In the novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy uses colors to describe various scenarios and for symbolism.
“We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others” (Lowry). In other words, this means that to get what you want, you have to get rid of other things you have. Although there are many similarities between The Giver and our society, there are a lot more differences like families, rules, and personal freedoms. For starters there are many differences with families between their society and our society.
