Fire was Montag's whole life motto, until he realized that it was only negative results at the end of the book. Fire is a symbol of both good and bad, Montag believes it is a sense of cleansing. He uses its to destroy books. Firemen look at fire as a source of cleansing to the world. Although Beatty thinks it is best to use it for burning books, Montag begins to realize that's not what they should be using it for. There is more than one meaning of fire used in this book.
