Chiu. As Ha sets up the scene for the story, it is noted that Mr. Chiu and his bride were having lunch in Muji Train Station square where a large “concrete statue of Chairman Mao” resides. By having this symbol at the beginning, Ha gives a hint of the significance of Chairman Mao to China as well as the allegiance of Mr. Chiu to his political party. Another symbol that is used is the bowl of tea being thrown on Mr. Chiu and his wife. Tea is a culturally significant symbol as it symbolizes spiritual tranquility and moral values.

The fact that he photographs these two men behind what seems to be a white wall and sitting on a thing covering shows the simple, religious aspect of Smarth tradition. These Brahmins choose one of the five deities to be the central focus and the other four surround that deity. This simplicity in how they practice their religion coincides with the simplicity of the background.

She knew her family was waiting patiently for her to finish her work in the city and come back home. Lakshmi thought she was doing the right thing by going to the city to help her family’s financial situation, but she did not know that she was going to have to “give herself up” in the way she was forced to. It was Lakshmi’s idea to go work in the city to help her family, so it was a big surprise to her when she found out she wasn’t actually going there to be a maid. The thought of her family at home was the one thing that motivated her to get her work over with so she could come back home: “Each night, I dream that Ama and I are sitting outside our hut...and she is twining my hair into long dark braids” (109). Lakshmi was describing how she dreams about her and her mother sitting back at home together.

One of the three main symbols used were the grandmothers clothing. This was shown by in the beginning she cared solely about how others saw her whereas towards the end she didn't care for her apparel and truly on cared for finding grace and redemption. Another main symbol used was the weather. The weather in the story started off with no clouds and no sun during the day and ended clear with no clouds showing that the grandmother, in the end, was able to find grace and redemption through a tough time. The last main symbol shown in the story by Flannery O'Connor was Bailey's shirt.
If she didn’t treat the girls so poorly, one can assume Mumtaz would not hold the same position of power. While other characters in this book share the cruelness of Mumtaz, not all of the women in Lakshmi’s life put their needs above others to reach their goals. Ama, Lakshmi’s mother, exemplifies the traditional “good” female role. To understand what I mean by this, one would have to define “good”. I use the word in the purest sense: good and bad; black and white.
