Do you believe that dogs are man's best friend? Winterdance by Gary Paulsen is a true story about himself, it starts when he moves with his wife to a small house in the woods of minnesota, driving them broke in the process. He starts to run a trapline with dogs and finds his passion, running dogs. Paulsen unconsciously decides to run the Iditarod and we follow him throughout his journey, training, traveling, and finally actually running the race. Gary Paulsen uses symbolism, motifs, and theme to further the reader's understanding and enjoyment of the book.
The poem “The Colonel”, written by Carolyn Forche, uses juxtaposition and symbolism to emphasize the strength of the colonel and the weakness of the oppressed. Forche uses juxtaposition of words implying luxury versus words implying poverty to criticize society and strengthen the gap in wealth present in society. In addition, the larger amount of luxurious words, such as “wine, gold, television, pet dogs, etc” as opposed to impoverished words demonstrates society's attempts to cover up and conceal problems. Though the overall tone of the poem may be one of a darker mood, there are more words implying wealth than there are of indigent words.
At the beginning of The Jacket, Gary Soto immediately provided evidence to the audience of how nerve wracking it is to be an adolescent. He made that clear by writing this, “ I remember the green coat that I wore in fifth and sixth grade when you either danced like a champ or pressed yourself against a greasy wall, bitter as a penny toward the happy couples.” In the introduction to the essay it says that this genre of writing explains the importance of clothing to adolescents. He knows that even the way you dress can impact who you are seen by others. Soto explained it by writing this, “I took off the jacket during lunch…
Throughout the book his attitude towards the jacket changes as he learns to accept it. The main idea where this is portrayed is when he calls the jacket “that green ugly brother who breathed over my shoulder that day and ever since.” This quote also uses personification to describe his new feelings towards his jacket. The figurative language extends the understanding of his new reaction to the jacket by being able to relate to their own lives
The short story "The Jacket," written by Gary Soto, is a memory of when the writer was a child. He had this ugly green jacket that his mother got for him. He liked it until he got back to school. There, he lost his friends, and even some of the other kids were making fun of him and his green jacket. Now, I went through something similar myself, except I couldn't take my problem off.
Take a second and imagine, imagine yourself being starved, tortured, and enslaved. What would you do to save your children and yourself? In Cynthia Ozick's story “The Shawl” we meet Rosa and her two daughters Stella, who is fourteen, and Magda an infant who is being concealed, on their grueling march to a concentration camp. The Nazi’s are unaware of Magda’s existence due to Rosa hiding her under the shawl as they are marching. Rosa is faced with the difficulty of keeping her daughters alive, while trying to survive herself.
As a symbol in the novel, I choose “The Red Sweater and Club. This is one of the first symbols we see in the book. The man with the red sweater, who treated buck and the other dogs poorly, and beats them with his club. We do not know him but he is described by what he is wearing. Judging by his character he is a very cruel and wicked man.
The symbolism in, “The Jacket” supports the overarching theme: Be grateful for what is given. The boy in the story is ungrateful for the jacket his mother got for him so Soto is trying to get the point across that one should be grateful for what one is given because some people aren’t as fortunate. A person can’t be upset about what they have when there are other people who aren’t blessed enough to have it, beggars can’t be choosers. In the story, “The Jacket” Soto states, “I showed the cracks to my mother, who always seemed to be at the stove with steamed up glasses, and she said that there were children in Mexico who would love that jacket.”
Elementary school is a big step, especially getting ready for middle school. For example if one is bitter towards someone, meaning jealous or angry, then their middle school years won’t go very well. They will go through being angry and it will make them focus on less important stuff rather than their studies or sports. Similar to the boy in “The Jacket” by “Gary Soto,”he goes through his life being jealous of kids that are happy or have good relationships and new clothes. The boy does not like the jacket his mother got him and does not appreciate it enough, even though it gets the job done.
First, the symbolism in "The Jacket" supports the overarching theme that the clothes one wears, affect how a person feels. In fact, the main character even tries to get rid of the jacket, throwing it over the fence to the alley. Soto says, “Later, however, I swiped the jacket off the ground and went inside to drape it across my lap and mope.” In this, Soto is saying that the main character will always have
In the short story “Everyday Use,” Alice Walker shows the conflicts and struggles with people of the African-American culture in America. Question 1 In “Clothes”, by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, the use of symbolism to express the theme of change is evident throughout the entire passage. Mita has never had the freedom to express herself as she pleased. She has always had restrictions on what she could say, do or wear. She is married off to Somesh and through this, she discovers her newly found freedom.
