In the book, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, there were many symbols that could be interpreted in the novel. However, there were three symbols that were very significant to the story that was told. The symbols were of the fire, the conch, and of Piggy’s glasses. All three of these symbols were given an important role that was played in the novel. They all had caused something different to happen in the story, it either bringing order or chaos. To start with the first symbol, the fire, this could be analyzed in many different ways. One way is of the fire symbolizing of the boys hope and them being rescue. In the novel it states, “The fire's the most important thing. Without the fire we can't be rescued. I'd like to put on war-paint and be a savage. But we must keep the fire burning. The fire's the most important thing on the island, because, because--...Piggy whispered urgently. 'Rescue.”(129). The boys want to be rescued, so they put their hope onto the fire to help them signal for help to get off the island. Another example of this symbolization is when the novel states, "Your only hope is keeping a signal fire going as long as there's light to see. The novel stated, “Just an ordinary fire. You'd think we could do that, wouldn't you? Just a smoke signal so we can be rescued. Are we savages or what? Only now there's no signal going up. Ships may be passing. Do you remember how he went hunting and the fire went out and a ship passed by? (155). The other boys had left the fire because they rather go hunting for meat and having fun. This had shown that when they left the fire, it was also showing that they were leaving their only hope and chance of being seen by a boat and being rescued from the island.
