The Book Thief, once that name rolls off the tongue one thinks of an endless domino effect, per say something that resembles a series of unfortunate events. The book dates back to the late 1930’s: 1939 to be exact. Death plays a very big role in this novel as the narrator. We see everything through Death’s eyes. In the beginning he claims to have seen the book thief about three times. The first time he ever laid eyes on her was on a train, the second was when he went to retrieve a pilot who had crashed his plane. The last and final time he had seen the thief was after a bombing. Every time Death has seen the Thief, he would link each encounter with a color. Those colors were red, white and black; the colors of the Nazi Flag. Max has to stay hidden in the Hubermanns basement isolated. While Alex, Rudy’s father, and Hans are being sent to go and fight in the German army. Rosa gives Liesel a book that Max had written for her. It is based on their friendship and how he hopes one day they will be reunited. Hans is relocated to Essen where he is in charge of cleaning up after air raids. One day he changes places o n the bus with a man that highly dislikes Hans and due to this the bus ends up in a horrible crash. Multiple men died, Hans barely broke his leg. Liesel and Rudy head over to go and check on another air raid that had just occurred. They found and Allied pilot, they arrived just in time to see him pass. Death sees Liesel again while collecting the soul of the dead pilot. The mayor’s wife gives Liesel a notebook, and with it Liesel begins to write her own stories. One night while writing in her notebook her neighborhood begins to get bombed. They were able to pull Liesels corpse out, she was still alive. Rudy on the other hand, was a lifeless human. Liesel places her lips on Rudy’s cold lifeless body. He finally received the kiss he had always
