Living in 21st century America, everyone is used to having equal rights, no matter their color or gender. But it was not always that way. About 150 years ago, women and men were not equal. Women were not allowed to vote or even publicly speak. If you were extremely poor or from a foreign country, you would very likely be sold into slavery.
Racism is a very touchy and common issue in society today. Many people react differently to racism. Some people think that other races should strive for power. They think it should be a race to prove that any of the races can do whatever they want. Some people are more likely to promote this idea of competition amongst races.

Racism is a continuing battle for people of color because they are considered the “inferior” race by many. The reason for this is because America was built on white slave owners. People of color were pretty much always considered the “inferior” race because white people though they were entitled to owning everything, including people. It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. Racism is an issue that has lasted throughout history, providing justification for a group’s dominance over another.
