Shade Me by Jennifer Brown is an action filled novel set in Brentwood, California, which is on the west side of Los Angeles. The main character is Nikki Kill, a 17-(18?) year old who has synesthesia. Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which one sense overlaps with another, such as sight. Another form of synesthesia is when objects such as shapes, pictures, numbers, and letters are joined with a sensory perception such as color, smell or flavor. The second one is the type that Nikki has. For Nikki, numbers and words are associated with colors. Emotions and numbers are seen as colors. It uses the pronoun “she” and doesn’t reveal the name of the main character. In this chapter, the female main character briefly describes her dislike of her life as a daughter in a rich and popular family. She mentions over and over that “she asked for five million”, and says that she should have asked for more (money). Then, she starts realizing this was not a good idea, and the person she was expecting starts walking up to her door. She gets scared and calls the only person on her contacts list, but it’s too late. The person she was expecting gives her the money, and she takes it and starts walking out. But, she doesn’t get far before someone yells to watch out and she turns around just in time to a large object hitting her in the head, knocking her unconscious. In the second chapter, Nikki is taking a break in the cool air outside her house, when she gets a call. She reluctantly answers her phone, thinking that it’s her ex-boyfriend, Jones, but the color combination of the phone number is different that his. She says “hello” a couple times but there is only some background noise, and then the caller answers and says “Nikki”. The mysterious caller doesn’t get a chance to continue because a person in the background tells them to put the phone down, and they do. Nikki first thinks they might have called the wrong number, but it couldn’t be because they said her name. Then, she gets another call from the same number. This time, though, it’s a nurse calling from the hospital telling Nikki to get to the hospital soon and that it was an emergency. Little did Nikki know at the time that this was only the beginning of the big, deep hole of lies and dark secrets that she would be part
