Character Summary: In the beginning of the movie, Claudia Gator is seen having casual sex with a stranger. He later leaves when Claudia’s dad, Jimmy, comes over to reconcile with Claudia. Claudia is not open to reconciliation and curses at her father to leave, which he does. The altercation with Claudia’s father greatly agitates Claudia and leads her to snort cocaine while listening to very loud music. Hearing Claudia’s loud argument with Claudia’s father and Claudia’s very loud music, Claudia’s neighbors call the police, who dispatch officer Jim Kurring. Jim stays at Claudia’s for a cup of coffee and later asks her out on a dinner date that night, which she agrees to. The intimacy versus isolation stage lasts from early adulthood until middle adulthood. Intimacy versus isolation is often marked by seeking to find a long-term partner or by failing to find a long-term partner and feeling isolated because of it. In the beginning of the movie, Claudia finds a random person in a bar to have casual sex with, but this is not an emotionally intimate relationship, and she still feels internally isolated. Claudia’s risky sexual behavior could be explained through her father and her relationship with both of her parents. According to research conducted by Rezazadeh et al. (2015), “[people] who had been abused by a family member showed more risky sexual behaviors in comparison to individuals who didn’t experience such abuse.” When Claudia was young, her father molested her, and she now has had multiple sexual encounters with strangers, which is dangerous due to the risks of sexually transmitted diseases. Because of the molestation that occurred in her childhood, Claudia has isolated herself from her parents. Claudia’s bad relationship has also potentially increased her risky sexual behavior; according to Rezazadeh (2015), poor familial relationships are associated with more risky sexual behavior. Although Claudia has exhibited risky sexual behavior, she is open to find a long-term partner, which is why she goes on a date with officer Jim. Although Claudia does not believe Jim will like her because of her issues, they kiss; Claudia, however, then leaves the date.
