Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Blackfish, a documentary by Gabriela Cowperthwaite is a perfect example on how pathos can appeal to the audience's’ emotions to get them to feel sad while watching the documentary. Blackfish is a documentation of how SeaWorld tortures this show Orcas, SeaWorld has not taken action on the multiple trainers’ injuries and death, and they keep it out of the media to keep the money flowing and the tourists coming. This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.
Its main focus is on the SeaWorld orca (killer whale) Tilikum and how being in captivity affects wild animals. Since his capture in 1983, Tilikum has been involved in three deaths (Kohn, 2013). The most recent of those was the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010. (Kohn,2013) SeaWorld's official stance on the death was that the trainer was targeted by the orca because her hair was in a ponytail (Kohn, 2013). "Blackfish" shows how at SeaWorld, and parks like it, whales like Tilikum can become dangerous after years of detachment. We use these Orcas for our attractions and for our pleasure when will they actually be happy. Why is it that everything they breed a new Orca they end up leaving or get taken away from the mother itself. Orcas kept in captivity are mis treated and aren’t treated like if they were in the wild. There have been documented animal deaths at many of the theme parks around the country and the world that cannot easily be explained. These Orcas need a wild life and should be breed
