Book banning has been around for hundreds of years. In fact the first book to be banned was in Quincy Massachusetts in 1637. This book was banned as it went against a group of religious people’s ideals. This is the basis for almost all book bannings. Many parents claim that their children are too young for the material that is contained in these books, but many teenagers in high school are already 16-18 years old. Book banning also violates students first amendment rights, shutting down open ended conversations about sensitive topics that may be contained in the books, and will give the students a clear understanding on what real life is like. Books with topics on real world situations can “help young people better understand the world they live in, the human condition, and issues they face in their culture” (Source E). Learning and understanding the world that these students live in can help them become a better member of society. They can learn about how their words and actions have consequences and that not everyone is going to agree with them. Parents are always trying to teach their children these lessons, but by banning fiction books with these topics are making it harder to understand. These books can help the kids understand that “Life isn’t all rainbows and unicorns, so why shelter them from FICTION?” (Source B). Parents can show their children these books to help teach them about the real world. It could help their children understand what their parents are trying to teach them, while also giving them a source of entertainment. Ultimately, by reading and teaching students about real world situations can help them when they go out into the world on their
