This has always been a topic of interest to the pharmaceutical field, but the question that keep enveloping my mind is what can we do to help the society in other to reduce and possibly eradicate the overdoes related deaths? This is because the intestines lined with opioid receptors, affects peristalsis. In the state of Minnesota alone, opioids have caused more deaths every year than homicides, according to a star Tribune review of state death records.
It was stated that 212 deaths related to prescription opioids last year. There is an increase from 23 in 2000. In addition, from 2 in 2000 to 98 last year, there were increased deaths from heroin overdoses. also increased.
Including other prescription-related deaths, the motility rate from prescription and illegal opioids example heroin has increased dramatically in our state. I can relate with this situation very well because of one of my elective class, Drug of Abuse. We have encountered so many cases on how people get involved and what might lead to their abusing of drugs. Depression, Anxiety and Inferiority complex is a few of them. State have taken some steps to control access to prescription drug by placing restrictions on daily supply that can be dispensed in the pharmacy. Some others are putting measures to increase access to life-saving opioid reversal agents such as naloxone. A law was passed in Minnesota in 2014 on the use of Naloxone. It acts rapidly to temporarily reverse the effects of opioids, thereby effectively treating overdoses which is available in easy- to-use formulizations.
