many of today's parents smoke cigarettes around their children without realizing the potential consequences it could have. Americans develop major health conditions every year due to smoking, such a lung cancer. This can also become fatal. Secondhand smoke can be equally as dangerous, and many children are experiencing this daily. Cigarettes contain many harmful chemicals, and we aren’t careful enough when it comes to exposing children to these chemicals.
I chose to analyze this image because I believe it’s extremely powerful, and the topic isn’t talked about enough. You see commercials here and there that show individuals who have cancer from smoking, they advertise resources to help them quit smoking. However, people think they’re indestructible. They may be more likely to think that cigarettes aren’t harmful, and that they are “okay” to take part in. They also may be even more likely to think this, if their own parents are doing it. As the image I chose to analyze suggests, children often follow in their parent’s footsteps. What mommy or daddy does, they automatically think they can do as well. This is proven to be true with many different things, even something as simple as the verbiage they pick up from their parents.
As stated in an article on healthychildren, “Secondhand smoke causes about 3,000 deaths from lung cancer and tens of thousands of deaths from heart disease to nonsmoking adults in the United States each year.” (“Dangers of Secondhand Smoke”). The article also states that regardless if parents try to distance themselves from their children while smoking, they can still be exposed to the chemicals.
