Applying a systems thinking approach to the development of a personal leadership model enables a leader to help clarify and challenge their understanding of leadership, and visually conceptualize the interrelationships and patterns surrounding their leadership approach. Using Latham’s (2013) formula, “Leadership + Design = Sustainable Excellence” to personalize a leadership systems design model increases internal value and aligns external stakeholders needs to design and orchestrate organizational value with the strategy of the organization. The following paper uses the nine key components from Lathan’s (2012) design framework to construct a personal leadership model. Thus, the purpose of a leadership system is to support leadership activities using a supportive framework that incorporates leadership principles, guidelines, and processes that advance the provision, promotion, and development of individuals, teams, within an organization’s leadership structure. Latham identifies an often overlooked element in his Management Systems Design for Sustainable Excellence article (2012) that the need of a leadership system to encapsulate all the stakeholders, ensure a leader’s purpose and requirements reflect the bigger picture and not the traditional select needs of select few high-demand stakeholders.
