A truly effective presentation must include several key elements to help the speaker prepare the presentation, stay organized, and ensure the message is focused on the audience. Three key elements that I believe are most important are to know your audience, know your material, and rehearse as much as possible before the presentation. In this section of paper, I will review the TED videos and assess each one as it relates to the key elements to successful presentations I feel are most important and compare the effectiveness of both speakers. I chose the two videos because as a senior leader, I must have self-confidence and be able to inspire others.
The first TED video I reviewed was Simon Sinek’s How Great Leaders Inspire Action. Mr. Sinek’s presentation did an excellent job explaining how great companies and great people inspire others. Using my benchmarks for success, he most definitely knew his material and appeared to be well prepared. I believe that his message connected with the audience and would be well received in almost any audience.

In this model, he used three concentric circles – WHY, HOW, and WHAT. He proceeded to tell us that successful companies and people work from the inside of the circle to the outside (WHY-HOW-WHAT) but that most people will work from the outside to the inside (WHAT-HOW-WHY). Those who inspire people, know ‘why’ they do things, not just ‘what’ they do. His statement, “people don’t care ‘what’ you do, they care ‘why’ you do it” was repeated many times throughout the presentation.
