The first group observed was TOPS Club Inc., a weight loss support group. The purpose of TOPS is to aid individuals in achieving their weight loss goals (TOPS Club, n.d.). The group provides assistance using educational tools, member support, and accountability in order to be successful. Membership may be acquired by joining a local chapter or becoming an online member. The first visit to the local chapter is free, and then if one decides to join a yearly membership cost of $32 plus local chapter dues of $5 a month is required (TOPS Club, n.d.). TOPS is a weight loss support group that does not provide meals or endorse products. On the other hand, it encourages members to choose healthy foods and eat in moderation according to the TOPS meal plan (TOPS Club, n.d.). TOPS gives it members numerous educational resources. The group has weekly meetings in order for member to see noticeable changes and receive enough support to reach their weight loss goals. This leadership style is appropriate when members have high cognition, verbal skills, insight, and motivation in which the members seem to display during the session (Cole, 2012). The leader is voted into power by the group members based on who they felt represented their interest the best. The facilitator gains the support of the members by allowing them to make choices and have the group vote on the decisions. In addition, the group leader is a member of the group and this makes the leader more committed to pursuing the needs of the group. The members of the TOPS group lead their own group. This leadership style is effective because it allows the members to have a say in how the group is conducted.
