Baker’s new Book Club could choose texts wisely next year and use ones that will promote confidence in its members.“Ta-Na-E-Ka” is a story about a girl who had to do Ta-Na-E-Ka which was a traditional ceremony where they had to survive out in the wild for about 18 days. She found and stayed at a place getting food and shelter without putting in nearly as much work as intended; however in the end she passed after being confident that her action was right. “Bullying Epidemic: Facts, Statistics, Prevention” is about bullying informing us about it. For example, when the text states “I told them the whole story. “That’s not what I trained you for,” my grandfather said. “Grandfather, I learned that Ta-Na-E-Ka is important. I handled it my way. And I learned I had nothing to fear. There’s no reason in 1947 to eat grasshoppers…Grandfather laughed aloud!...“You should have done what your cousin did. But you know more about what is happening to our people today than I do. You would have passed the test in any time.” That shows you must be confident in your actions even if they weren’t right, but that doesn't mean they’re going to be wrong. In “Ta-Na-E-Ka'' the main character was correct and confident in her abilities and judgment, allowing her to be her personal best. Although her actions weren’t right, they weren’t wrong. This is evident when the author writes “...bullying is damaging and can be emotionally and psychologically devastating…” and “Step 1 - Be Aware and pay attention…Step 2 - Recognize it is a problem and don't ignore it…” The first piece of evidence explains that you can be emotionally and psychologically damaged from bullying and your self-confidence affects how you are emotionally so when bullied you won’t be able to do your personal best. The second piece of evidence is one of the many steps that explains how to deal with bullying and prevent it which can teach students at Baker how to prevent and deal with bullying allowing them to be more self-confident and do their personal best. “Bullying Epidemic: Facts, Statistics, Prevention” can really help Baker students be their personal best by informing students on how to prevent bullying and hopefully be less of it, which then boosts their confidence in both themself and
