Take Five is a cool jazz genre musical composition that was performed by Dave Brubeck Quartet. This song is popular uniqueness for it is written in the unusual meter of 5/4. This song is the first jazz song that is that has a time signature that is other than 3/4 or 4/4. Take Five demonstrates both principles of heterogeneous and homogenous sound ideals being played out in one ensemble. It is considered as heterogeneous, for the different instruments producing different timbres. It also considered as homogenous, for the string bass’s having a similar timbre to the low keys on the piano. The instrumentation in this song includes the saxophone, piano, bass, and drum. Each instrument can be tracked as it enters the performance. The drummer starts the piece, then the pianist comes in. They are joined by the string bass player, and finally, the saxophone in which begins the melody. The drums act as the rhythm, while the piano and the bass acts as the harmony, and the Saxophone would then come in as the melody. Improvisation is a compositional process in which a musician exercises relatively great flexibility with given material during a performance. The “given materials” might be a tune, a chord progression, or a rhythm. Jazz is often characterized by improvisation in the chorus, in which a set of chord changes to a form, that is either AABA, ABAB2, or a twelve-bar blues. Through improvisation, the players will then interpret the melody by playing in their own characteristic way.
