Individuals today are very concerned with what is going on in the world around them. They are cognizant of the actions of their employer’s and of the companies in which they spend their hard-earned money. It is not enough for a company to have the best products in the market, they must also be looking for the “greater good”. This is where corporate social responsibility is important for companies who want to stay in business. Corporate social responsibility encompasses many areas including philanthropy, social and environmental impact, and the impact on the community. The company’s website states (ONE FOR, 2018), “ONE FOR ONE. Through your purchases, TOMS helps provide shoes, sight, water, safe birth and bullying prevention services to people in need. Learn more about what we give” (para. 1). This company began by simply donating one pair of shoes for every pair that was purchased, which helped create the “one to one” initiative. That has quickly spread to other areas of need for individuals without means. Toms shoe’s currently works with over 90 giving partners that helps provide services in more than 70 countries. This is a staggering number of individuals helped throughout the world. The company will benefit through their bottom line, which as anyone knows, is the ultimate measure of success in business. If Toms shoe’s was not making money, they would not be so generous. Those pretending that this is some altruistic notion is seriously fooling themselves. That’s not to say they don’t enjoy giving to those in need, it is just saying that to do so, your company must be profitable. These actions also help in attracting a more talented workforce from the millennial generation. This generation places a great deal of importance on social responsibility and by having such a great mission, this will help ensure Toms shoe’s is able to hire a more diversified and talented workforce. For the employees, the benefit lies in knowing that they are working for a company that has a strong social responsibility which will enable them to work for a growing company, while serving the greater good. The positive impact on the community and the world cannot be denied. By providing all these services to those in the need, Toms is truly making a lasting impact on the world that will be felt for generations to come.
