Hershey, the multi – billion Dollar Company, whose roots originated from the landscapes of rural Pennsylvania was founded in 1894 by Milton Hershey. Milton was also the owner/found of Lancaster Caramel Company. Milton originally started to produce chocolate so he could coat his caramels with it, so by 1895 he created a subsidiary know today as the Hershey Chocolate Company, which began to produce over one hundred different varieties of chocolate products. In the early stages of Hershey existence the products the company produced were advertised/marketed with a lavish appearance, yet many of the products Hershey produced were far from lavish and expensive. Hershey even targeted smokers, particularly women with chocolate cigarettes that of which it described as a healthy alternative to traditional tobacco products. To empathize the brands quality Hershey in 1898 adopted a trademark logo of a baby in a cocoa bean. Hershey wanted to imply to its consumer base that its chocolate was pure as a baby and came directly from cocoa beans. Ever since Hershey’s founding Milton himself knew the importance of advertising and delivering quality products to his consumers. Milton himself would say “Give them quality; it’s the best advertising in the world.” Milton knew the importance and perception of quality to the masses he felt that if the consumers knew the product was produced with quality in mind that the chocolates would sell themselves. However Hershey was on a mission, and even though his chocolates were widely popular and successful he knew the real key to success would be the development of a formula which would transform ordinary milk into a chocolatey rich drink. Hershey then began to concoct a variety of formulas until 1899 when he believed he had finally perfected it; this would lead Hershey to being the first ever chocolate milk producer in America.
