Employees have to know what the objectives are and how they can be reached on a productive scale. Safety in any industry is highly important, because throughout the process of harvesting a tree to processing it, workers need to have safety rules in place to ensure employees are not injured while working. Being responsible as a corporation today is a social contract with the public and customers, meaning, that you will do what you say you will and follow the values that are already established and made public (Ghillyer, 2014). Being honest and open with the customer base and the public is vital to the overall success of the business and proves responsibility so that the business is trusted. Community is an important value because it is not possible to produce millions of trees in or manufacture products in a single area. Therefore, International Paper has used an Instrumental approach within the community by providing transparency about what is going on in each level of the industry. Governments can pass new laws each year that protect areas from logging and harvesting trees, while increased conservation efforts are emerging, meaning less trees for processing. In 2010, International Paper announced a new set of goals, which outlined where the company is going strategically and financially. Vision 2020 focuses on the following areas: energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, air emissions, water use, water quality, fiber certification, fiber efficiency, solid waste, recycling, supply chain, safety, and community involvement (IP, 2016).
