The airline industry is one of the biggest industries today with more than 8 million people flying every day, and over 3 billion a year. In the United States airlines account for 1.5 trillion dollars in U.S economic activity. With numbers like these clearly airlines collect a lot of data but their data was never really structured to where it could be used. Big-data techniques are a rather new thing to the airlines industry, so how exactly are airlines collecting data and using it? Southwest Airlines uses the data is collects to promote their products and services to customers. Their info is individually tailored to customers just like United Airlines is but Southwest is more interested in their customers behaviors. By looking at the behaviors of their customers the can offer better rates which in turn gets them loyal customers. Southwest airlines also is known for data mining their social media in order to get there customers what they want. Southwest is now known for their great customer service.
Before 2014 United airlines used to collect and analyze the data of customers when they would check in online. They would take note of what add-ons and upgrades customers would choose and then use that information to see what products

These global distribution systems are not ran by the airline but they are responsible for handling the reservation process for the airline. Even when a customer is checking into their flight, all that information is processed by the global distribution system. There is currently no standard on how global distribution systems should handle Passenger name records so every company handles there’s different. Since there is no standard on how they should handle the passenger name records different information for each different company is collected, one company might collect and hold credit card info when the next might hold on to ID or passport
