Introduction Southwest Airlines is a passenger airline that provides scheduled air transportation in the United States and near-international markets. Southwest principally provides point-to-point service, rather than the hub-and-spoke service. The hub-and-spoke system concentrates most of the airline’s operations at a limited number of central hub cities and serves most other destinations in the system by providing one-stop or connecting service through a hub. Often, the company’s airlines fly into a city’s secondary airport to help offset costs to the consumer (Southwest Airlines, 2015). The company offers discounted low fares at a good price.
Organization Overview Southwest Airlines was founded by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King in 1971, as a commuter airline flying in Texas from the cities of Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. In 1977 the airline went public and was traded in the New York Stock Exchange to become what it is today (Southwest Airlines, 2015).
