In life there is right, wrong, good, bad, dark and light. There is a saying what’s in the dark will always come to light. Dark represents evil, negativity, bad, blinded and death. Light represents, good, positivity and life. In the novel “The Tale of Despereaux” by Kate Dicamillo the contrast of dark and light is being used throughout the story representing various forms.
At the very beginning of the story the mother mouse gives birth to a bunch of mice but only one is alive. The author goes on to explain how the light shined in on Despereaux as he laid there with his eyes wide open.
"Look," said a brother named Furlough, "his eyes are open. Pa, his eyes are open. They shouldn't be open."

It also sends the reader a message as well that this mouse is special and the chosen one. When I use the term the chosen one I mean this character is significant because he was chosen to embark on a journey through this novel. Throughout the entire book the author speaks to the reader a lot. She not only speaks to the reader directly, but indirectly as well.
The novel displays a lot of foreshadowing within the characters. In the dungeon where the rats live there is a rat that is very different from the rest by the name of Roscuro. He is obsessed with the light. He finds beauty in the light and is very curious what is lurking above. He is seeking to be enlightened by life in the light.
As the characters share similar situations with each other for example Desperaux, Roscuro both are unique and very different from the rest of their kind. Desperaux lacks the interest of chewing on paper he rather reads the words on it and Roscuro lacks the interest of torturing a little mouse and killing him. They don’t want to follow the laws of their kind and as much as they try to fit in with their communities they cannot fight against what they really are on the inside. The irony of this entire thing with Roscuro is that he was given a name that how light and dark are placed. So he is labeled as evil because he is a rat and he lives in darkness and wants to see where his darkness fits into the
