Loyalty is one of the most important characteristics a person should have. In order to have relationships of any kind, loyalty is needed. With this also comes love. The characters who illustrate these two attributes are Lucie Manette, Jarvis Lorry, and Sydney Carton. Love and loyalty, when mixed together, can either cause a person to become wise and insightful or foolish and impulsive. The theme “love and loyalty” in A Tale of Two Cities is personified through the character of Lucie Manette. Her father, Dr. Manette, is imprisoned for eighteen years. During this time, Lucie never forgets about him. When Dr. Manette is released, she restores him back to health with her love. After Dr. Manette fell back into his shoemaking, Lucie stays with him every night and day. When Charles Darnay is being arrested, after he and Lucie were wed, she remained loyal to him and never gave up hope. Every day she would stand outside the jail for two hours just so Darnay could catch a glimpse of her. Even though Jarvis Lorry has no family, he loves the Manette’s as his own. He finds Lucie, then informs her about her father. Jarvis Lorry leaves with her to go to Paris to identify Dr. Manette and to recall him back to life. After Dr. Manette is …show more content…

He was so in love with Lucie that he would do anything in order for her to be happy. He knows that even though his love for her is worthless, she has helped him dream of better existence. Lucie is married to Charles Darnay, who has been arrested and sentenced to death. In Carton’s “A Life You Love” to Lucie, he declared that he would give his life up for Charles so that Lucie can have a happy life. Carton takes the place of Darnay in his trial and dies for him. He triumphs over death and lives in on the memory of Lucie and her child whom she names after Carton.
