The theme of "death and resurrection" is featured in the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. This theme is seen through the character of Dr. Manette, the character of Sydney Carton, and the character of Jerry Cruncher. The first character that is part of the theme of theme of "death and resurrection" is the character of Dr. Manette.One example is at the beginning of the story when Mr. Lorry gets a message that says “RECALLED TO LIFE.” (Dickens 4) this means that after eighteen years as a prisoner, Dr. Manette has been found and has survived through the ordeal. Another example of the theme is when Dr. Manette says “ As my beloved child was helpful in restoring me to myself,I will be helpful now in restoring the dearest part of herself to her” (Dickens 103). This quote is significant to the theme because the reason Dr. Mannette wanted to survive through his imprisonment was because he left his daughter abandoned when he had gone to jail for 18 years and she was the reason he is alive. Jerry Cruncher was an employee for tellson's bank but his main job for their was the messenger, but Jerry's main job on the side to make money was to be a grave robber and sell the bodies for scientific research. An example of Jerry cruncher using the theme of "death and resurrection" is when he tells Mrs. Pross “ - them poor things well out o’ this, and never no more will I interfere with Mrs. Cruncher’s flopping, never no more!” ( Dickens 139) This is an example of the theme because he used to yell at his wife for cursing him by praying but now he is resurrected because he is letting her pray all the time and he will now put people into the ground when they die instead of taking them out.
