In the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, the author shows the power of selfless acts of redemption and sacrifice through characters such as Sydney Carton and Dr. Manette as well as through sacrificial and redemption imagery motifs. The book is set in during the 18th century and shows the conditions which led to the french revolution and reign of terror, and how the act of selflessness and sacrifice is seen as a redemptive action that allows many of the characters to find meaning and purpose in their life. Throughout the novel, characters make great sacrifices for the good of others often at great personal costs. Sydney Carton sacrificed his own life so the woman he loved would have all she wanted. Dr. Manette redeemed himself after being imprisoned and tortured for years with love and compassion all because he was trying to redeem his integrity. Although terrible things happen throughout the revolution and many loved ones are harmed in the end Dickens was able to give the novel a powerful emotional impact.
