The American politician, and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt once said “‘People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built’”. In Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louis Zamperini, exemplifies this quote because he grew with life’s experiences. In fact life put Louis in a Japanese P.O.W camp where he grew into a new man. Miraculously, Louis somehow always survived the tough situations life threw at him, and it was this skillfulness that got him through it.
“A lot of times I find that people who are blessed with the most talent don't ever develop that attitude, and the ones who aren't blessed in that way are the most competitive and have the biggest heart.” In Laura Hillenbrand’s nonfiction book Unbroken, the competitive spirit of Louis Zamperini is demonstrated when, against all odds Louis goes, from being a thief as a kid to competing in the Olympics in Berlin. Tragically as a young adult during World War II his bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean Louis’s future started to head for the worst as he was stranded for 47 days. Needless to say it was Louis's own competitive spirit that allowed him to live to tell this unforgettable story.

In this chapter James Loewen approaches “Herofication” in history as a sense of idolization and false misinterpretation of figures in history. Loewen throughout the chapter surrounds the making of heroes, in which he describes as a degenerative process. He explains that “heroes” are shaped and built up and taught in the classroom most times leaving out and belittling other heroes even when having extensive backgrounds. The chapter ties back to what he believes the textbooks got wrong, he compares to notable figures in history, Helen Keller and President Wilson and how they are depicted. Loewen argues that text books fail to show the relationship between a hero and a person instead they give highlights of the “hero” and don’t give a full
The Angel of the Battlefield As a teacher, a Civil War battlefield nurse, and the founder of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton made herself known by her love of helping people. Almost two hundred years ago, no one would have known that a baby named Clara Barton would change the world in a positive way. No one, not even her own parents, could have imagined that she would put her life on the line to help Union and Confederate soldiers directly on the battlefield during the Civil War. Even though Barton was a legendary nurse, she had other accomplishments under her belt, although the accomplishments went unrecognized.
In the first chapter Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your AMerican History Textbook Got Wrong, James Loewen explores the common process of heroification within America’s history. The flaws of many individuals, specifically Woodrow Wilson and Helen Keller in this chapter, are usually overlooked when recounting their achievements. Loewen points outs that when heroes are recognized for certain things it only covers a short person of the person’s life. The media and schools filter out the bad to leave room for inspiration and good.
Maurice Willows: Unsung Hero of the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 During the early 1900s, African Americans continued their struggle for civil rights on a national scale with seemingly no definitive solution in sight. In the wake of one of the most violent race riots in American history, one man sought to overlook racial differences and the rules of his own organization to provide aid to those in need. Through the leadership of Maurice Willows during the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot, the American Red Cross compromised their mission enabling the organization to be the sole responder, provider of relief, and champion of African American rights. Maurice Willows’ decision to defy the tenets of the Red Cross made him an unsung hero who saved countless lives.

The first author was a child soldier during the Sierra Leone Civil War, the second author was the second oldest child in a family of poor drifters and believed to never amount to much, and the third author was a little girl caught up in the midst of the agenda of an oppressive government, and yet they were all able to succeed and grow stronger under the tutelage of their respective mentors. Ishmael Beah had Lieutenant Jabati to give him a reason to fight, Jeannette Walls had her father Rex Walls to make her stronger and more determined, and Marjane Satrapi had her mother Taji Satrapi as an example of freedom and just rebellion. All of these mentors strove to help their charges succeed in life, and the hardships that they inflicted upon their charges, whether purposely or accidentally, just drove them even
Kerri demonstrated determination by fighting off excruciating pain to achieve a goal, while, Tracy showed determination by working hard everyday in the most depressing and physically challenging jobs. Kerri showed selflessness by sacrificing her health for the good of her team, while Tracy showed selflessness by putting her patient's health before her own and risking everything to save others. Kerri Strug, world known, has accomplished a lot during her career and has become a role model for many young individuals. However, she is still very similar to my everyday hero Tracy. Tracy did not achieve worldwide fame or role model status, but she still showed determination and selflessness, fitting my definition of a hero.
Caring, courage, and selflessness are three strong traits that demonstrate ones willingness and strength to make the great sacrifice of putting others before oneself. There are few people that carry these traits, so when one openly displays them, it allows others to view just how much courage they do have. Khaled Hosseini, the author of A Thousand Splendid Suns, excellently demonstrates through two young women, what it is like to face tough situations in order to keep their loved ones from harm’s way. Putting others before oneself can be a difficult sacrifice, but it builds strength of character. Mariam and Laila demonstrate such selflessness, as well as courage, and caring.
