“Double standards don’t work in relationships, if you don't want them doing something, you shouldn’t be doing it either.” Bridge When readers consider the themes of both “Taming of the Shrew” and “We Should All Be Feminists”, they can see that the texts converge on the idea of double standards, though they express the impact of said social and cultural norm differently. Shakespeare explores this theme through gender expectations, while Adichie delves into it by means of sexism towards women's behavior. The double standards are that women are the cooks of the family, while not allowing them to have any of the food they prepare. Another time this happened was at their own wedding. Petruchio showed up drunk and was being so disrespectful towards all the guests. Katherine announced, “I see a woman may be made a fool / If she had not a spirit to resist” (3,3,226-227). She is very self aware and knows he is trying to make a “fool” out of her even on her big day. When Katherine was doing the smallest act to disrespect a man, she got harrassed, but when Petruchio shows up and disrespects his soon to be wife, she's still the one who gets looked down upon. CONCLUDING In “We Should All Be Feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, she expresses how even from a young age women are being treated unfairly and that it is becoming such a normal thing to do.In this book, Adichie had talked to one of her friends about her workplace and her experiences there. It was uncomfortable because, ”She didn't want to speak up because she didn't want to be aggressive(23).” As women, we feel as if we have to do everything politely and calmly to keep our jobs, even if we are doing the exact same things as the men
