In Taming of the Shrew, Katherine wants to get feminism, but she doesn’t know how to use her feminine nature to do so. Bianca has so many suitors because she acts like the perfect 17th century woman, obedient, not too smart, and pretty. Katherine wants to say what she thinks about things, but when someone is opinionated, they end up having disagreements, and women not being obedient to men was looked down on in the 1600’s. Katherine has to learn to use her feminine nature, the way Bianca does, to get feminism. Katherine needs to figure out how to be respected and loved for who she is, but she isn’t the perfect and obedient 1600’s woman; she wants to express her thoughts. Petruchio wants to marry Katherine for her dowry, but he also wants to be loved for who he is. In order to have both of those, he needs to be able to “tame” Katherine. If he is able to have Katherine not be so opinionated and defiant, she will finally be respected and loved because of her feminine nature and he will get Katherine’s dowry and her love. After Katherine is “tamed”, she gets the feminism she wants and a way to manipulate Petruchio with her feminism. For example, “Katherine, I charge thee, tell these headstrong women what duty they do owe their lords and husbands,” Katherine is given permission and told to lecture and chastise Bianca and the widow about what they owe their husbands, which is one of the things that she enjoys to do most. When she uses her feminine nature, Katherine is able to get feminism, be loved for who she is, be married, and have a way to manipulate her husband when given the
