Money, land, and your name for generations to come, that is what marriage was. Now, it’s all about love, commitment and growing old together. The movie 10 Things I Hate About You and the play Taming of The Shrew have the same characters with relationships and social encounters, and although the relationships are based off the same characters, the roles change. This is due to the small variances between each character and the time each form of entertainment was created. Marriage has evolved from being about gaining land and money to actual love. Petruchio and Patrick may have craved money, but it altered into something else. Love in marriage and high school is very different, but it is still considered love. Petruchio has a form of love that is more focused towards the loyalty that Katherine has towards him. “Twenty crowns? That’s a bet I’d make on my hawk or my hound. I’d wager twenty times as much on my wife”(Shakespeare 5.2.76). This was the point when Petruchio loved his new creation, but the fact he only married her for money and is willing to pay that money away to prove that his fabrication was loyal to him. That may not be visible the love he has with the real Katherine, but with the trophy wife he now obtained. The vow Petruchio made to get money is now love towards his new found statue that he sculpted. Patrick on the other hand, turned his materialism into something completely opposite. “…Some asshole paid me to take out a really great girl…Yeah, but I screwed up. I, um… I fell for her. “ He pronounced it, plain as day that he loved her. The thing is that the bond, both Patrick and Petruchio have to Katherine and Kat is completely different. Marriage, and relationships in general, meant control and undivided attention.
