Oprah Winfrey once said that “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside of yourself.” A mentor in a person’s life can change their life forever. Learning about yourself through someone else greatly impacts one’s life. In the literary work Tangerine by Edward Bloor, Luis’s choices affected Pauls’s life, self-concept, and relationships with peers and family members because he acted brave, supportive, and confident. Tangerine is about a boy named Paul who moves to a town called Tangerine in Florida where many peculiar things happen. Paul’s self-concept was impacted by Luis’s bravery. The first example is when Luis died. Paul was mourning Luis’s death when he says “ I feel like Luis is a part of me now”(252). Paul feels that the values Luis taught him are now a part of him. The first example is when Paul visits the citrus groves to help out one morning. Luis said, “Believe it or not every type of tree that we produce here begins its life as a rough lemon tree.”(157) This relates because Paul was like a rough lemon tree but later changed into a beautiful strong tree. He learns to stand up for himself, support himself, and be more confident. Another example is when Luis talks about why he loves working with citrus fruits. Luis says “ You know I walk out here in the mornings sometimes, I fall on to my knee, and I weep right into the ground I’m overcome by the beauty of it all.” (157) Paul learns to take in the beauty of life. He learns to be confident and do what he loves. The last example is when Paul confronts Erik and Arthur about killing Luis.
