“Books and movies are like apples and oranges, they’re both fruits, but taste completely different.” –Stephen King. According to the Washington Post, 79.3% of books are better than their move counterpart. I think this movie-story duo are in that extra 20.7% of movies better than the stories they are based on, and I’m not a Disney guy! Compare and Contrast would be a good way to find out which is more logical. Let’s take the movie Tangled and the story it’s based on by the Grimm Brothers; Repunzel for an example, let’s start with similarities. Such as, throughout both of these stories people used Repunzel’s hair to get up the tower. This shows that within both of these stories, there probably isn’t another suitable way to get into it. It is important that she is stuck up there because Gothel has locked her up there so no one can find her. For instance, their roles change, originally Flynn was the prince and Repunzel was just an average girl, but in Tangled Repunzel is the (lost) princess and Flynn is an average (wanted) guy. This shows that maybe the adapter either didn’t know or just didn’t get the best translation to English. This is important because it adds a whole new layer to the story if Repunzel is the princess. Additionally, in the story the prince becomes blind and falls out of the tower. This shows that the original author probably had something different in mind for Flynn. This is important because it makes Repunzel use her hair in a different way. Also, Repunzel is named after the plant that her mother ate to make her better. This shows that the name Repunzel didn’t have much meaning in the movie. This is important because the story at least had some logical naming.
