Miscommunication is very adverse for all types of relationships. The Joy Luck Club by
Amy Tan is based on Chinese mothers and their relationships with their American daughters and how their relationships are not strong because of their weak communication. Amy Tan uses Jing-mei and her mother Suyaun to support this claim that communication is important for a parent's relationship with their child or children. Jing-mei’s relationship with her mother was very bleak since they argued, often leading them to talk less and having overall negative communication. The reason that this quote is important Is because Jing-mei and Suyuan didn't have a strong relationship and it was because of arguments similar to this. Suyaun forgave Jing-Mei when Tan wrote, “She offered me the piano…,”(Tan 154). This is important because Jing-mei saw this offer as a sign of her mother's forgiveness for the things she had said and done to her mother. Another example of when they came to an understanding is when Tan wrote “For, after our struggle at the piano, she never mentioned my playing again,”(Tan154).
