Taoism became an official Chinese religion during the Song Empire. As Confucianism become popular religion Taoism steadily fell from favour, and changed from a just official religion to a popular chinese tradition. After the communist merger the China, Taoism was banned, with the effect that the number of Taoists fell by ninety-nine percent (BBC). At this time Taoism began to thrive in the great freedom on offer in Taiwan. After the Cultural Revolution the Chinese government began to approved a religious freedom. Taoism began to revitalize in China, and Taoist temples and followers can now be found all over the country.
