Target 7.1 Essay

All important aspects of the goal are underlined

Due to their vagueness, all of the SDG 7 targets are effective in evaluating most, but not all, of the important aspects of the goal. In addition, the targets individually require modifications to improve their measurability and feasibility. In this synthesis, the goal’s important aspects that are covered by the targets, as well as those that are overlooked will be mentioned.

The ICSU and the ISSC (2015) argues that the SDG 7 should include Target 7.4, which aims to “[e]nsure by 2030 access to all to energy carriers and/or energy consuming devices that keep indoor air and other local pollution levels within safe limits”. This way, the cleanliness and safety of the energy provided is not compromised by outdated and unsustainable household appliances. As a bonus, this target complements SDG 3, which deals with health.

Proposed Improvements for Individual Targets

Target 7.1

Modern energy services should be reliable enough to allow one to live a daily life, in which hot showers, indoor lighting, properly cooked food, clean water, and communication devices are sufficiently available at any given time (Benjamin K. & Sovacool, 2013). Hence, the definition of “reliable and modern energy access” should be centered on the concept above.

Target 7.2

This target could be modified to read, “Increase to 30% the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030” because the IRENA believes that that is a feasible objective (2014).
