Estella Eliassen Ms. Ashley Gilson Grade 8 English 2-16-24 Similarities Between “Tattercoats” and Grimms Brothers “Cinderella” The two Cinderella stories I’m comparing are by The Grimms Brothers and “Tattercoats” in the book, The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen. The story of “Tattercoats” is based off of the story of “Cinderella" by The Grimms Brothers, and they show how people need to change who they are and how they live so they can have a better future. Both of the stories are similar because they changed who they would ultimately be in order to get away from their bad family to a better life. Altering her identity so she can go to the ball is something that changed and improved the protagonist's life. It was intentional that both versions of Cinderella didn’t want anyone to know her true identity. She altered her identity by wearing the magical dress to fit in with the other people in the ball. She wanted to experience what it would be like, and later on it was the reason for her future to change and become a lot better. Lastly, another similarity in the “Cinderella” stories is that the two Cinderella’s had different forms of mentors who help them, but they all help Cinderella in very similar ways. In a part of Alera’s story, The Old Man of The Sea is about to take Alera, but Alera’s mentor, her aunt, saves her and turns the Old Man of The Sea into a squid so he’s harmless.
