The Foundation Phase in Wales is a statutory curriculum introduced in 2008 and concentrates on children between the age of 3 – 7 years old in maintained or non-maintained settings. Rather than having a child complete exercise books over and over again, the Foundation Phase places great emphasis on learning by doing. This will involve the children having to learn through experiential learning with adult observation and interaction. Adult interaction can have a great impact on children when used correctly. By using open ended questions, the adult is encouraging the child to communicate, which will develop Language, Literacy and Communication skills.
