Education of young people is the foundation with which a majority of societies have been built on, with America being included in that. People are often unable to progress without basic knowledge of morals, language, and societal expectations, and more higher level learning has become pervasive in North America with new expectations of at least 2 year degrees to be hired for most jobs, even jobs, such as policing, that never required a degree in the past. People would think that is knowledge would extend to education people and children specifically about issues of food justice, and even, quite simply, how one eats healthily. Famous Chef Jamie Oliver is one such person. In his Talk entitled "Teach Every Child About Food”, Oliver starts by laying out that in the approximately 18 minutes that his talk extends about four americans would die because of the food they eat. Others facts called to mind by Oliver include that many children’s life expectancies are about ten years less than their parents because of food, and two-thirds of americans are “Statistically overweight or obese.” These statistics can most likely be attributed to massive increase of fast food throughout the country in the last thirty or so years. The shift went from fresh and local to processed and imported, and on top of the processed food issue is the issue of portion control problem. American portion is much larger than European countries, even in at fast food restaurants. For example, soft drinks are 52% larger, and hot dogs 63% larger in America than in France, and the average portion size in France is 25% smaller than the average portion size in Philadelphia. Oliver also touches on the problems with school food, something about 31 million kids eat a day have one to two times a day for over half of the year. The food placed in front of the kids is once again increasingly more and more processed which only reinforces that processed food is the norm in American society. Oliver argues in his Ted Talk, that there should be a mandatory requirement to begin teaching kids about food. He showed a video of a really simple way to begin this teaching process. He does this by simple showing children different fruits and vegetables and give them a name that children can become more familiar with.
